MONTREAL 1976 - Bid History
- There were three candidate cities to hold the Olympic Games in 1976: Montreal, Canada, and the two other competitors from the world's most significant countries - Los Angeles, USA and Moscow, USSR.
- In May 1970, at the IOC Congress in Amsterdam, Montreal Mayor Jean Drapeau's speech led to the Games of the 21st Olympiad being awarded to Montreal.
- After Munich 1972, Lord Michael Killanin was elected as the new President of the IOC.
Games of the 21st Olympiad, 1976 - Interesting Facts
- Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the 1976 Summer Olympic Games. The Olympic Stadium was still under construction at the Opening ceremony due to poor management and corruption.
- More than 20 African nations boycotted the Games because New Zealand's rugby team toured South Africa and played against them. The IOC did not exclude New Zealand from the 1976 Olympics.
- Also, athletes from Taiwan stayed home because Canada refused to recognize Taiwan as an independent nation.
- Soviet gymnast Nikolai ANDRIANOV won four gold, two silver and 1 bronze medal.
- Female swimmer from East Germany Kornelia ENDER won four gold and 1 silver medal.
- The American swimmer John NABER has collected the same number of medals.
- In gymnastics, Nadia COMANECI from Romania won three gold, one silver and one bronze medal. She made Olympic history - seven perfect 10.0s awarded her for her performance.
- The Soviet female gymnast Nelli KIM won three gold and one silver medal.
- The American swimmer James MONTGOMERY won three gold and one bronze medal. He became the first man to break the 50-second barrier on 100m freestyle - 49,99.
- The East German female athlete Ulrike RICHTER won three gold medals in Swimming.
