BERLIN 1936 - Bid History
- Berlin, Germany, was selected as the host city for the 1936 Summer Olympics in 1931, two years before Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power.
- After the news about the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany, several calls were made for a boycott of the Games all over the world.
- An alternative, also known as the People's Olympics, was scheduled for Barcelona, Spain, but they were canceled when the Spanish Civil War broke out.

- The Third Reich's Chancellor Adolf Hitler officially opened the 1936 Olympic Games at the 100,000-seat Olympic Stadium.
- Spain did not take part in the Games because of their Civil War.
- For the first time, the international community watched the Torch Relay, in which a flaming torch from Olympia, Greece, traveled through seven countries to Berlin for the Opening Ceremony.
- The 1936 Olympics were televised live for the first time, and 25 large screens were set up throughout Berlin, allowing residents to watch competitions for free.
- In 1936, the world remembered two persons - Adolf Hitler, who attempted to prove his theories on the superiority of the Aryan race, and African-American athlete Jesse OWENS of the USA, who disproved Hitler's theory by winning four gold medals.
- The German gymnast Konrad FREY won three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. His teammate Alfred SCHWARZMANN won three gold and two bronze medals.
- The female swimmer from the Netherlands Hendrika MASTENBROEK won three gold and one silver medal.
- The French athlete Robert CHARPENTIER won three gold medals in Cycling.
