ST.MORITZ 1928 - Bid History
- In 1926, the Netherlands, as host state of the Summer Olympics 1928, backed out of staging the Winter Olympics this year, and Switzerland was granted the right to host the Winter Olympics.
- In May 1926, at the 24th IOC session in Lisbon, the IOC decided to award the Winter Games to St. Moritz.
- Two other candidate cities were Davos and Engelberg.
- These were the first Olympic Games without Pierre de Coubertin, who became the IOC's honorary president in 1925. At the same time, Henri de Baillet-Latour was elected the new head of the Olympic movement.
2nd Winter Olympic Games, 1928 - Interesting Facts
- The President of Switzerland Edmund Schulthess officially opened the Second Winter Olympic Games.
- Germany was allowed to participate in the Olympic games after the First World War.
- Warm weather disturbed athletes again. So, in Cross Country, at the beginning of the 50 km race, the air temperature was near zero degrees Celsius. By the end it had risen to 25 degrees, and many skiers had dropped out.
- In Bobsleigh, the number of starts was cut from 4 to 2 due to warm weather, and the 10000 m speed skating competition was canceled due to thawing ice.
