SARAJEVO 1984 - Bid History
- In May 1978, at the 80th IOC session in Athens, Sarajevo, Yugoslavia was selected to host the 14 Winter Olympic Games in 1984.
- The second round of voters gave the following results: Sarajevo - 39 votes, Sapporo, Japan - 36. The last candidate city was Falun, Sweden - 8 votes in the first round.
- It was the first Winter Olympic games in a Socialist country.

- President of Yugoslavia Mika Spiljak officially opened the 14 Winter Olympic games 1984.
- The Games were remembered for the biggest snowfalls and gale-force wind, which corrected the alpine skiing schedule.
- Because of a commercial contract, a few top Alpine skiers - Ingemar STENMARK, Sweden, Hanni WENZEL, Liechtenstein were banned from the 1984 Olympics.
- Soviet ice hockey team again was the best and a great goalkeeper Vladislav TRETIAK won his third gold medal.
- To increase the number of athletes, the IOC offered to pay the expenses of one male and one female athlete from each country taking part.
- A black African skier from Senegal - Lamine Gueye, competed in the Winter Olympics For the first time.
- Unfortunately, the Civil War destroyed many Olympic sights in the early 1990s.
