TOKYO 2020 - Bid History

  • In Round 1, three candidate cities bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games - Madrid, Spain; Tokyo, Japan and Istanbul, Turkey.
  • In September 2013, at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Tokyo was selected as the host city of the Games of the 32nd Olympiad with 60 votes over Istanbul (36 votes) in Round 2.
  • Tokyo, Japan, became the first Asian city to host the Olympic Games for the second time.
  • Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Games of the 32nd Olympiad were postponed by one year.

  • Japan's Emperor Naruhito officially opened the Games of the 32nd Olympiad in a nearly empty 68,000-capacity Olympic Stadium, after the Games were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Tokyo venues did not have spectators during the Games due to the city's coronavirus state of emergency.
  • The metals required to manufacture the approximately 5,000 gold, silver, and bronze medals were extracted from small electronic devices contributed by people from all over Japan.
  • The Olympic motto - "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Faster, Higher, Stronger) was changed to "Citius, Altius, Fortius - Communiter" (Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together) in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
  • Russia was banned from the Olympics again over a doping cover-up. Still, Russian athletes competed in the 2020 Games as "neutrals" under the moniker ROC, or Russian Olympic Committee.
  • American swimmer Caeleb DRESSEL won 5 gold medals.
  • Australian female swimmer Emma MCKEON won 4 gold and 3 bronze medals. Her teammate, Kaylee MCKEOWN, won three gold and one bronze medal.

  • The female athlete from Korea San AN won three gold medals, taking first place in all events in Archery.

  • The American female runner Allyson FELIX won one gold and one bronze medal at her 5th Olympics and became the most decorated athlete in women's Olympic Athletics.
  • Jamaican hurdler Hansle PARCHMENT had accidentally taken the wrong bus on the day of the final. Volunteer Tijana Stojkovic gave Parchment money to take a taxi directly to the stadium. A hurdler arrived at the correct venue, where he won a gold medal.
