AMSTERDAM 1928 - Bid History
- After bids for the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games, Amsterdam, Netherlands, was selected to host the 1928 Summer Olympics - over the objections of the Dutch monarch, Queen Wilhelmina, who thought the Olympics were a pagan festival. She refused to attend either the Opening or Closing ceremonies.
- There was only one other candidate city - Los Angeles, USA, the next host city for the 1932 Olympics.

- After Queen Wilhelmina's refusal, Prince Hendrik officially opened the 1928 Olympic Games at the new 40,000-seat Olympic stadium.
- Germany and its World War I allies were readmitted.
- For the first time, an Olympic flame burned brightly over the host city during the competitions.
- A new Olympic tradition was introduced: at the Opening Ceremony, Greek athletes enter the Olympic stadium first, and host nation athletes last.
- Swiss gymnast Georges MIEZ won three gold and one silver medal.
- Luigina GIAVOTTI became the youngest medalist ever when she gained silver in gymnastics at 11 years and 302 days.
