GRENOBLE 1968 - Bid History
- There were six candidate cities for the 10th Winter Olympics: Calgary, Canada; Grenoble, France; Lahti, Finland; Sapporo, Japan; Oslo, Norway and Lake Placid, USA.
- In January 1964, at the 61st session of the IOC in Innsbruck, Grenoble was awarded the hosting of the 10th Winter Olympic Games.
- The third round of voters gave the following results: Grenoble - 27 votes, Calgary - 24.
10th Winter Olympic Games, 1968 - Interesting Facts
- The President of France Charles de Gaulle officially opened the 10th Winter Olympic Games in 1968.
- The 1968 Winter Olympics were spread across the French Alps, and there were many Olympic Villages because of the distance to the events.
- Jean-Claude KILLY of France won all three gold medals in Alpine skiing, but only after the most significant controversy in Olympic history. Austrian Karl SCHRANZ was the best in the slalom, but he was disqualified for missing a gate after watching the video referees.
- In women's luge, three East German athletes who had finished first, second and fourth were disqualified for heating their runners.
- For the first time, gender tests for women and doping controls for all athletes were introduced.
