PARIS 2024 - Bid History

  • Initially, there were the five candidate cities - Paris, France; Hamburg, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Rome, Italy and Los Angeles, USA
  • Following withdrawals in the 2024 Summer Olympics bidding process that led to just two candidate cities - Los Angeles, USA and Paris, France, the IOC announced that the 2028 Summer Olympics would be awarded at the same time as the 2024 Games.
  • In September 2017, at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Paris was elected as the host city of the Games of the 33 Olympiad
  • Paris became the second city to host the games three times (1900, 1924, 2024) after London (1908, 1948 and 2012).

  • The Opening ceremony in Paris 2024 was held outside a stadium for the first time in the Summer Games history, and eighty-five boats ferried the athletes along the Seine River. French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the Games of the 33 Olympiad during a rain-soaked ceremony in the French capital.
  • Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic medals were decorated with real pieces of the Eiffel Tower to give athletes an "unforgettable souvenir" of the games.
  • French swimmer Leon MARCHAND won 4 gold and 1 bronze medals.
  • Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler Mijain LOPEZ NUNEZ became the first athlete to win five consecutive individual gold medals in the same event.
  • Basketball player from the USA Diana TAURASI won 6th gold medal in her 6th Olympic games.
  • German sprinter Alexandra BURGHARDT won a bronze medal in the 4×100 meter relay after having previously won a silver medal in the 2022 Beijing Winter Games in the two-woman bobsleigh.
  • Less than four kilometers from the line, Remco EVENEPOEL got a puncture to his back wheel, quickly got a bike change, and won a gold medal in the men's road race.
  • American swimmer Katie LEDECKI won 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medals and became the third most decorated athlete in Olympic history.

  • After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the IOC condemned the aggression and banned Russia and Belarus from hosting international sports events or sending teams to represent the countries at them. So, only a few athletes from these countries could compete in Paris 2024 in neutral status.
