- Four candidate cities bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games: Madrid, Spain; Tokyo, Japan; Chicago, USA and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- In October 2009, at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Rio de Janeiro was selected as the host city of the Games of the 31st Olympiad with 66 votes over Madrid (32 votes) in the 3rd round.
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, became the second city in Latin America to host the Olympic Games after Mexico City in 1968.

- The Vice President of Brazil, Michel Temer, acting as President, officially opened the Games of the 31st Olympiad at the rebuilt famous 75,000-seat Maracana Stadium.
- These Games marked a doping scandal involving Russia, which affected the participation of its athletes in Rio 2016.
- Michael PHELPS, the most decorated Olympian of all time, won 5 gold and 1 silver, increasing his total to 28 and his gold medals to 23.
