GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN 1936 - Bid History

  • In May 1931, at the 31st IOC session in Vienna, two Bavarian towns, Garmisch and Partenkirchen, were awarded the right to host the Winter Olympic Games.
  • Later, in 1935, Garmisch and Partenkirchen merged to form Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but this merger did not affect the IOC decision in any way.
  • The other candidate cities were Schreiberhau, Braunlage-Schierke (both in Germany) and St. Moritz, Switzerland.

4th Winter Olympic Games, 1936 - Interesting Facts

  • Chancellor of Germany Adolf Hitler officially opened the 4th Winter Olympic Games in 1936, and the Olympic flame was first lit at the Winter games.
  • When IOC president Henri Baillet-Latour saw the road signs in Garmisch-Partenkirchen that declared "Dogs and Jews not allowed", he demanded that they be removed. The German team included only one Jewish athlete - Rudi BALL, who played on the ice hockey team.
  • For the first time, Alpine skiing events were included in the Olympic program. However, the IOC declared that ski instructors could not participate in the Olympic games because they were professionals. In response, Swiss and Austrian skiers boycotted the Games.
  • Norwegian speed skater Ivar BALLANGRUD won three gold and one silver medal.
  • The famous Norwegian Sonja HENIE, who had participated in all Winter Olympic games before, won her third gold medal in women's figure skating.
