LOS ANGELES 1984 - Bid History
- Since June 1978, there have been many meetings between Los Angeles and IOC officials, the purpose of which was to convince the IOC that a private group could organize the Olympic Games.
- And on 20 October 1978, at the White House, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and IOC President Lord Killanin signed the Olympic contract, and the 1984 Olympics were awarded to Los Angeles, USA.

- The President of the USA, Ronald Reagan, officially opened the Games of the 23rd Olympiad at the renovated Coliseum stadium.
- The Soviet Union and 16 of its allies boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in retaliation for the US boycott of the 1980 Games in Moscow, and 125 world champions did not compete.
- For the first time, the Olympic Games were organized without government funding.
- China participated in the Games for the first time since 1952.
- Female gymnast from Romania Ecaterina SZABO won four gold and 1 silver medal.
- American athlete Carl LEWIS repeated Jesse OWENS 1936 record, and won four gold medals in the 100, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump.
- The Chinese gymnast Li NING won three gold, 2 silver and one bronze medal.
- The American female swimmer Nancy HOGSHEAD won three gold and one silver medal. Her teammates: Tracy CAULKINS, Mary MEAGHER, Richard CAREY and Rowdy GAINES won three gold medals each.
- Kayaker from New Zealand Ian FERGUSON won three gold medals.
- The female runner from the USA Valerie BRISCO-HOOKS won three gold medals in Athletics.
- Wrestler of the USA Jeff BLATNICK overcame cancer and won a gold medal in Classic wrestling.
