Since June 1978, there have been many meetings between Los Angeles and IOC officials, the purpose of which was to convince the IOC that a private group could organize the Olympic Games.
And on 20 October 1978, at the White House, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and IOC President Lord Killanin signed the Olympic contract, and the 1984 Olympics were awarded to Los Angeles, USA.

The President of the USA, Ronald Reagan, officially opened the Games of the 23rd Olympiad at the renovated Coliseum stadium.
The Soviet Union and 16 of its allies boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in retaliation for the US boycott of the 1980 Games in Moscow, and 125 world champions did not compete.
