OSLO 1952 - Bid History

  • In June 1947, at the 40th session of the IOC in Stockholm, the IOC voted to accept the application and invitation from Oslo, Norway.
  • It was the first Winter Olympics in Norway, a Nordic country and the birthplace of cross-country.
  • The other candidate cities were Lake Placid, USA and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
  • For the first time, the Winter Olympics were held in a large city.

6th Winter Olympic Games, 1952 - Interesting Facts

  • The 6th Winter Olympic Games were officially opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Ragnhild, granddaughter of King Haakon VII, who was in London at the funeral of King George VI of Great Britain.
  • An Olympic flame was lit from the house's hearth in Morgedal, where Sondre Norheim, the first famous Norwegian skier, was born.
  • Norwegian speed skater Hjalmar ANDERSEN won three gold medals.
  • The German bobsleigh team won two gold medals because their two-man crew weighed more than 520 pounds, and the four-man team weighed over 1,020 pounds. After the Games, the IOC officials declared new weight limits of 220 pounds per man.
  • For the first time, the ice hockey tournament was held indoors at the Winter Olympics.
