PARIS 1924 - Bid History
- The 1924 Summer Olympic Games had initially been scheduled for Amsterdam, Netherlands, over other candidate cities - Barcelona, Spain; Los Angeles, USA; Rome, Italy and Prague, Czechoslovakia.
- However, in his final act, Pierre de Coubertin, the IOC President, transferred the Games to Paris, France - he wanted to give France a chance to redeem itself after the failure of the Games of 1900 in Paris.
- It was the city's second time hosting the Olympics.

- French President Gaston Doumergue officially opened the 1920 Olympic Games at the 60,000-seat Olympic Stadium.
- The Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Faster, Higher, Stronger) was used for the first time.
- A new Olympic tradition was introduced in Paris in 1924 - the Closing ceremony tradition of raising three flags: the IOC flag, the host nation's flag, and the following host nation's flag.
- Athletes lived in the first Olympic Village in wooden cabins.
- The media introduced a new point-scoring system: 7 points for first place in each event, 5 for second, 4 for third, 3 for fourth, 2 for fifth, and 1 for sixth.
- The dominance of Finnish middle-distance runners was confirmed by Paavo NURMI, who won 5 gold medals, and Ville RITOLA, who won 4 gold and 2 silver medals.
- The French athlete Roger DUCRET won three gold and two silver medals in Fencing.
- The American swimmer John WEISSMULLER won three gold and one bronze medal. After finishing his sports career, he played Tarzan in the 1932 movie Tarzan the Ape Man and became a Hollywood star.
