- Five candidate cities bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games: Madrid, Spain; London, United Kingdom; New York, USA; Paris, France and Moscow, Russia.
- In July 2005, at the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, London was selected as the host city of the Games of the 30th Olympiad with 54 votes over Paris (50 votes).
- London, United Kingdom became the first city to host the Olympic Games for the third time.

- The Opening ceremony of the Games of the 30 Olympiad began at 20:12 local time at the new 80,000-seat Olympic stadium in Stratford. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the 30th Jubilee Olympic Games in London.
- Women were on each Olympic team and competed in all sports for the first time in history.
- Runner from South Africa Oscar PISTORIUS, who uses prosthetic limbs, competed in the 400 m semifinals and reached the men's 4x400m relay final.
- American swimmer Michael PHELPS won 4 gold and two silver and beat the previous record of Larissa LATYNINA'S 18 medals record with 22 medals.
- American female swimmer Missy FRANKLIN won four gold and one bronze medal.
- Another American female swimmer Allison SCHMITT won three gold, one silver and one bronze medal. Her teammate, Dana VOLLMER, also won three gold medals.
