SARAJEVO 1984 - Bid History
- In May 1978, at the 80th IOC session in Athens, Sarajevo, Yugoslavia was selected to host the 14th Winter Olympic Games in 1984.
- The second round of voters gave the following results: Sarajevo - 39 votes, Sapporo, Japan - 36. The last candidate city was Falun, Sweden - 8 votes in the first round.
- It was the first Winter Olympic Games in a Socialist country.
14th Winter Olympic Games, 1984 - Interesting Facts
- The President of Yugoslavia Mika Spiljak officially opened the 14th Winter Olympic Games in 1984.
- The Games were remembered for the biggest snowfalls and gale-force winds, which corrected the alpine skiing schedule.
- Because of a commercial contract, a few top Alpine skiers - Ingemar STENMARK, Sweden, and Hanni WENZEL, Liechtenstein were banned from the 1984 Olympics.
- Finnish female skier Marja-Liisa HAMALAINEN became the best at the 1984 Winter Olympics, collecting three gold and one bronze.
- The Soviet ice hockey team was again the best, and goalkeeper Vladislav TRETIAK won his third gold medal.
- To increase the number of athletes, the IOC offered to cover the expenses of one male and one female athlete from each participating country.
- A black African skier from Senegal, Lamine Gueye, competed in the Winter Olympics for the first time.
- Unfortunately, the Civil War destroyed many of the Olympic and cultural sights in the early 1990s.
