TURIN 2006 - Bid History
- For the 2006 Winter Olympics, the IOC introduced a new selection process that prohibited IOC members from visiting the candidate sites.
- In June 1999, at the 109th IOC session in Seoul, Torino, Italy was awarded the 20 Winter Olympic Games over Sion, Switzerland, by a 53-36 vote.
- The other candidate cities were Helsinki, Finland; Klagenfurt, Austria; Poprad-Tatry, Slovakia and Zakopane, Poland.
20th Winter Olympic Games, 2006 - Interesting Facts
- The President of Italy Carlo Azaglio Ciampi officially opened the 20th Winter Olympic Games 2006.
- In Figure skating, Chinese pair Dan ZHANG and Hao ZHANG skated their free-skate program, but Dan Zhang injured her left knee and crashed into the sideboard when she attempted a throw quadruple salchow. The music was stopped in the next few minutes, but the athletes returned to complete their program and eventually won a silver medal.
- Korean short track skater Hyun-soo AHN won 3 gold and 1 bronze medal. His short track teammate Sun-yu JIN won three more gold medals.
- German athlete Michael GREIS won three gold medals in Biathlon.
- One thousand two hundred athletes were tested for doping in Turin, and there was only one positive result - Olga PYLEVA of Russia was stripped of a silver medal in Biathlon.
- On the last day, Italian skier Giorgio DI CENTA, who won the 50 km race, received his gold medal from his sister Manuela Di CENTA, a multi-time Olympic medalist and now a member of the IOC.
