MILAN, CORTINA D'AMPEZZO 2026 - Bid History
- In the first round, seven bids were submitted to host the 2026 Winter Olympics. Four cities subsequently withdrew their bids, and another bid was rejected.
- Two remaining candidate cities - Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy and Stockholm–Are, Sweden - were applied to host the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
- In July 2017, at the 134th IOC session in Lausanne, Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy were elected as the host cities with 47 votes to 34.
- The ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo is hosting the Winter Games for the second time, following its 1956 hosting.

- For the first time in Olympic history, the 2026 Winter Games were officially hosted by two cities: Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
- For the first time, the Olympic ceremony and the athletes' parade took place simultaneously across four locations, each hosting a different competition. Italian President Sergio Mattarella officially opened the 25th Winter Olympic Games.
- Norwegian skier Johannes Hoesflot KLAEBO won 6 gold medals in all ski events and became the most decorated athlete in the history of the Winter Olympics and the second-most decorated in the history of both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, with 11 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medals, behind only the legendary swimmer from the USA Michael PHELPS with 23 gold medals. In addition, Johannes Hoesflot KLAEBO's 6 gold medals set a new record for the most gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics, surpassing Eric HEIDEN's 5 medals in 1980.
- French biathletes Julia SIMON and Quentin FILLON MAILLET each won three gold medals, cementing France's dominance in the sport.
- The Swiss alpine skier Franjo VON ALLMEN won three gold medals, matching Toni SAILER's achievement in 1956 and Jean-Claude KILLY's in 1968.
