Initially, four cities were confirmed as candidate cities to host the 21st Winter Olympics - Vancouver, Canada; Salzburg, Austria; PyeongChang, Korea and Bern, Switzerland, but later Bern withdrew its candidature.
In July 2003, at the 115th IOC session in Prague, Vancouver, Canada, was elected host of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in the second round with 56 votes. PyeongChang, Korea was the second with 53 votes.

Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean officially opened the 21st Winter Olympic Games 2010. The first Olympic cauldron was lit at BC Place Stadium, and then Canadian ice hockey great Wayne Gretzky transported the olympic flame to Jack Poole Plaza to light the second external Olympic cauldron.
On 12 February 2010, Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luge slider, was killed in a horror crash during a training run before the start of the Olympics. After this crash, several athletes stated that the track was demanding and withdrew from the competition, even after the distance was reduced from 1,193 to 953 m (3,910 to 3,130 ft).
During the warm-up for the classic sprint Petra MAJDIC, a Slovenian cross-country skier, skied off-course and down a bank into a 3 m (10 ft) deep gully, where she broke five ribs. Despite obvious pain, she took part in the competition and won bronze.
Norwegian female skier Marit BJORGEN won 3 gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.
Chinese female short-track skater Meng WANG also took three gold medals.
Canada broke the Winter Olympics record with 14 gold medals.
